Record 77% of workers saving for retirement
Yet millions still need more in pensions
THE number of workers putting money away for their older age is at a record level, official figures reveal.
Now 77% of staff are in workplace pensions compared with 47% in 2012, when automatic enrolment into such schemes started.
The biggest jump is in workers aged 22 to 29. Latest Office for National Statistics figures show that this soared from 31% in 2012 to 80% in 2019.
But more men, 77%, than women, 69%, have a workplace pension.
Yet industry experts say workers need to be encour
WISE Saving for older age aged to save more for a comfortable retirement. Alistair McQueen, of insurers Aviva, said: “While a record number are saving in pensions, millions are still saving at inadequate levels. “Many are missing out altogether – either because they are too young, lowearners or self-employed.”
The TUC said despite these positive figures some 6.3 million employees are still without a workplace pension because employers don’t have to automatically enrol those earning less than £10,000 or under 22. It wants to see a pension contribution in all pay packets.
Sweet dog Diefer
A CHEEKY dog has been looking for a new home for almost 440 days – one of the longest canine searches in Britain.
RSPCA staff are trying to find an owner for nine-year-old terrier cross Diefer after his previous one died in 2018.
Hayley Crookes, at the animal charity’s centre in Sheffield where the dog is being looked after, said: “We are heartbroken the lovely Diefer hasn’t found his forever home yet.
“He has been so close but it has fallen through... He has such an affectionate side to him as well as a cheeky side.”
Diefer wants to live in a home with no other pets or children.
