TITLE NO.3 FOR MVG
TYRRELL HATTON won the first PGA Tour title of his career with a one-shot win at the Arnold Palmer Invitational last night.
In blustery conditions at Bay Hill, the Buckinghamshire-based star (celebrating, left) battled to a two-over 74 to beat playing partner Marc Leishman.
For Hatton, the first English winner of the event, this was the biggest victory of his career. And it came just a week after former US Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger questioned the ability of Europeans to win on the PGA Tour.
The world No.32 started the final round with a two-shot lead and led by three after playing the first 10 holes in level par.
But Hatton pulled his tee shot on the 11th into water on his way to a double bogey before parring his way home in tough conditions at the challenging Florida track.
With a one-shot lead on the last, Hatton found the green with an eight-iron and safely got home in two putts to finish on four under par.
World No.1 Rory McIlroy, who opened with a 66, shot weekend rounds of 73 and 76 to finish on level par and tied for fifth. Not the weekend he wanted but not to be sneezed at a month before the US Masters.
MICHAEL VAN GERWEN won the Ladbrokes UK Open for a third time last night.
The Dutchman, who last lifted the trophy in 2016, came back from 5-1 down to beat Gerwyn Price 11-9, clinching victory with double 18 to bank the £100,000 first prize.
Van Gerwen had earlier landed a nine-darter in his 11-3 semi-final win over Daryl Gurney.
