A soldier to cry on

-

OUR GIRL

BBC1, 9pm GEORGIE is having flashbacks. And there’s plenty to be traumatised about given what she’s been through.

This is the return of the hit soldier-girl drama with Michelle Keegan starring as the Army medic who has been through many wartime nightmares.

For once, she’s not in mortal danger as this series opens.

It’s her sister Marie’s wedding day to Frankie and there’s plenty of comedy from the family.

“Does my facilitator make me look like an alien?” asks Georgie and Marie’s nan, pointing to the fascinator perched on her head.

“Let’s hope the groom turns up this time, no offence, Georgie,” she adds, referring to the moment years earlier when Georgie’s ex-fiance Elvis jilted her at the altar. It proves a tough day for her, and she can’t help thinking of her time with Elvis, who was killed on duty.

Also, while she thinks she’s happy without a man and focused on her training role in the UK, she feels compelled to return to Afghanistan to support the new recruits.

Clearly this series is just easing viewers in with the wedding party because what’s to come in Afghanistan is going to be just as heartwrenching as ever.

In Kabul, Georgie and some of the section are caught up in a suicide attack which they later learn intended to target Dr Bahil, hospital administrator and candidate in the upcoming local elections.

Georgie learns that the attack was orchestrated by Aatan Omar, Elvis’s killer, who is still at large. And the news floors her…
