BONO*, BAKE OFF AND BOREDOM!
Jo reveals how she spends her time as she trains (and hopes) for a Wimbledon summer
JO KONTA is still training hard at home in the hope she will be playing Wimbledon this summer.
But the British No.1 will not be posting Joe Wicks-style videos of her training regime (below) because she claims her dog Bono is more entertaining.
Konta was back on our TV screens last night but only as a contestant in Celebrity Bake Off (right).
The world No.14 will not return to competitive tennis action until at least June, with tournaments suspended worldwide due to Covid-19. The French Open has been shifted to September but Wimbledon is still scheduled to start on June 29.
Konta said: “I think more than anything it’s important to be hopeful of playing Wimbledon, nothing wrong with being hopeful.
“Equally, it’s about not looking too far ahead, we don’t know how it is going to develop. Even just a few weeks ago, who knew we would be in this situation.”
The 2017 Wimbledon semifinalist said the two-month suspension of tennis “gives everybody a bit of breathing space” but keeping mentally and physically fit is proving tough.
Konta, who cut short last season because of a knee injury, said: “I’m doing the most I can but it is not ideal for the knee. I don’t have access to the equipment that I specifically need, but I’m not getting too stressed over it. There’s nothing we can do. I posted a couple of videos of me attempting to do stuff, but my dog is getting in the way, climbing on the foam roll or whatever, as I think that’s more entertaining.” Konta, who is holed up with boyfriend Jackson, is tidying her London home, doing jigsaws and, of course, baking. “I made a chocolate chip banana loaf, but it’s hard to eat all of it,” she said. “I like to share it, but hard to share, I am conscious that I can’t bake too much.”
Speaking before last night’s broadcast of Celebrity Bake Off, the former world No.4 added: “It was so much fun.”
