FIREFIGHTE­RS will deliver food and medicine, drive ambulances and retrieve bodies in the event of mass fatalities under emergency plans.

The measures agreed by the Fire Brigades Union, fire chiefs and employers will affect 48,000 firefighte­rs and control staff.

They will run for two months but can be extended if needed.

FBU general secretary Matt Wrack said: “Firefighte­rs are fantastic at teamwork, experience­d in driving emergency vehicles and, as a service rooted in the community, may be best placed to deliver items to the vulnerable.”
