Check in but only if you check out

■ I WAS flabbergasted to read that some flights from Europe and elsewhere in the world are still landing in this country – and even worse these passengers are “politely” advised to self-isolate (Mirror, March 30).

Why has the Government not already clamped down on this? What is the point of the whole country being in lockdown when passengers are still arriving from Spain, Italy and heaven knows where else, getting on public transport, moving freely around, while the rest of the British population are hunkered down?

Boris Johnson should get his act together quickly and immediately put an end to this debacle. A 100% effort is required by everyone, including the Government, to ensure we defeat this virus. This should be a wake-up call for Boris. Mary O’Brien, Hingham, Norfolk

■ While I feel sorry for all those people stranded abroad, it beggars belief that its going to cost £75million to fly them home (Mirror, March 31). Many of these people must have known they should get home once countries started going into lockdown. Let’s hope they all arrive back safely but they must be screened and put into quarantine for two weeks on arrival.

We are all in lockdown and social distancing seems to be working, so let’s make sure it continues until it’s safe to go out as normal again. Dave Mellor Warrington, Cheshire

■ Why are people being allowed into the country without being checked for the coronavirus, whether it’s Brits being repatriated or passengers from elsewhere?

Just how does this Government expect to stop the virus spreading when controls at airports are so lax? I appreciate people want to come home but why did some go anyway and ignore warnings?

I’m afraid I don’t have much sympathy for them. Our Government needs to wake up or we will end up like Italy and Spain where the death toll is much higher.

J Jackson, Birmingham

■ According to reports, cabin crew on the few flights still coming into UK airports are being asked to monitor passengers for symptoms of coronavirus but there still no checks on arrival.

Cruise ships are still on the high seas weeks after the fiasco of the Diamond Princess. Why is this still being allowed to happen?

We have conflicting and contradictory information coming out of Downing Street. The response is a total shambles – the bean counters are weighing up the odds of the finances needed to fight this virus against the cost in human life. T Ritchie, Wirral

■ Some people are being fined by the police for not adhering to selfdistancing rules. That’s fine, but why are flights coming into the UK and passengers not being checked on arrival? It seems like half measures. All flights in and out of all countries should be suspended until this pandemic is over – world lockdown is the only way to defeat the coronavirus completely. Mally Tuplin, Ulceby, Lincs

■ Can someone tell me why we are letting flights in from Spain and Italy without testing passengers any of whom could have the virus? We are also putting the NHS staff at risk by not allocating the testing kits to them as a priority.

David Ralphs, Southport

■ Reportedly there are more than 10 flights a day arriving from New York and everyone is allowed to enter the UK without being tested or going into quarantine. Still, half the country thinks Johnson is doing a good job. Unbelievable. Paul Evans, Kenilworth, Warks
