SPENCER’S TEAM ARE SOUND AS A POUND TO TAKE HIM PAST MILLION

- BY MELISSA JONES

RICHARD Spencer made a flying start to his training career with a fairytale win at Royal Ascot.

Rajasinghe also gave owners Rebel Racing and Phil Cunningham their first taste of victory at the prestigious meeting in 2017.

Initially based at the historic Albert House Stables, Spencer and his team expanded to Sefton Lodge during 2018.

The trainer is closing in on the £1million prize-money mark and has an exciting team of around 60 horses.

“They are a nice bunch and as long as they stay fit, healthy and sound, we should have a good season,” he said.

He’s risen up the ranks to a good standard mark now. Our plan last year was to aim for the Ayr Gold Cup, so hopefully we can work back from there. He’s a fun horse to have in the yard, he has won five times for us. We have had to be patient with him but when he gets his conditions he’s very good.

Keyser Soze

He usually runs well on the all-weather. Although he has not won since last February and hasn’t always been straightforward to train, he’s a good horse on his day. His mark of 96 is workable. He may have a big handicap in him this year.

Louis Treize

He was a good two-year-old and unfortunately he has been disappointing of late. If we can find the key to him he will win plenty of races. He banged his head in the stalls at Doncaster and had a gash on his head. Mentally it has affected him. We will step him up in trip to 7f .

Magical Ride

Last year he began off a mark in the 50s and ended up in the 90s. For him it took a while for the penny to drop.

He clipped heels on his last run at Ascot and his jockey was unseated. I think there is some unfinished business this year. The sectionals have been quick in his races.

Stay Classy

She was a good two-year-old. Last year she took a while to get going due to a niggle we found after her Newbury run. Then she did well on the all-weather and won twice, with a few other good runs. There’s definitely a chance she might be able to get some black type this season.

Thrilla In Manila

He won on debut at Newbury as a two-year-old and was then off for nearly a year. He has only had three runs and he is four. He has been gelded since running in November and has an opening mark of 82. He ran well to be fifth at Chelmsford on Monday.

Alabama Whitman

Fourth in the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot – a great run for a filly that didn’t cost a lot. When she won at Carlisle the next time she wasn’t at her best. Since then she has had a good break and will start off over seven furlongs or a mile. She’s an exciting horse to have

in the yard.

Tyson Fury

He’s a colt by Iffraaj and holds a Derby entry. He is a big horse and has taken time to strengthen up. We decided there was no point rushing to run at two. He’s athletic, good on his feet and has done some nice work at home. Hopefully he’s a talented three-year-old in the making.

Wings Of A Dove

One of our two-year-olds, she’s a sharp filly by Dark Angel and will be out soon over five furlongs.

Thefastnthecurious

Another of our youngsters, she’s from the family of 2016 Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Jet Setting. Probably she is one for the second half of the season.
