SIR David Attenborough is working on the BBC’s next globe-trotting natural history television series without leaving his home.

The 94-year-old is finishing off Perfect Planet, expected to air later this year, from his house and garden in Richmond-upon-Thames, South West London.

In recent weeks he has been filming links in the garden and recording the voiceover indoors.

The voiceover work meant he had to tape a duvet to a wall to improve sound quality.

Jack Bootle, the BBC’s natural history commissioning editor, believes Sir David’s efforts should mean there is no delay to the landmark series. He said: “Assuming no

happen, that series will air as planned in the autumn, which we’re all very excited about.”

The five-part series shows how weather, ocean currents, solar energy and volcanoes shape Earth’s diversity of life.

Announcing his work on the BBC1 show, made by Silverback Films, Sir David said: “But now, a new dominant force is changing the face of Earth: humans. To preserve

The programmes promise to take viewers on “a stunning visual journey that will change the way we see our home”. Animals featured include the white wolves of Ellesmere Island in Canada, bears of Kamchatka in eastern Russia and the vampire finches of the Galapagos islands.

Mr Bootle said that while Perfect Planet was on schedule, filming of other wildlife shows had been delayed by the Covid-19 lockdown.

He added: “We are bound to see some slides in the schedule. I think we will have to be pragmatic... with some series we might have to creatively reimagine their scope.

“However, our first position is always where we can get the crews back out there, get the filming schedule up and running and deliver a series of the same ambition that we wanted.”
