YORK has Britain’s “healthiest high street”, matching the city’s healthy house prices.
A study ranking city centres for healthiness noted York had more than the average number of leisure centres but relatively few vape shops.
The ancient city just beat Glasgow, which had the most gyms surrounding its high street.
Peterborough, Cambs, came last in the study, let down by its high number of takeaways and shortage of gyms and open spaces. Homebuying
website Bankrate UK compiled the research, giving high streets healthy marks for the number of gyms, leisure centres, local green spaces, vegan restaurants, libraries, museums, GP surgeries and, interestingly, pubs.
Places were marked down for fast food, vape shops, pawnbrokers, and betting shops.
Rotherham, in South Yorkshire, was second lowest-scoring city, with below average access to leisure centres and libraries plus higher-thanaverage number of vape shops and pawnbrokers. The report also found that average house prices correlated with how “healthy” a city centre was deemed to be.
Bankrate UK said: “Our analysis discovered that the average house price in cities that scored highly in our index was £319,691. At the other end, the house prices in cities with high streets that scored badly averaged out at £216,200.”
