Ole’s Best, Law and Charlton

- BY DAVID McDONNELL

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER believes he has a front line to rival the finest in Old Trafford history.

United’s success has been built on attacking prowess, from the holy trinity of George Best, Denis Law and Sir Bobby Charlton to the modern era of Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez.

Marcus Rashford (above), Anthony Martial and teen sensation Mason Greenwood have plundered 56 goals between them this season and emerged as one of the most potent attacking trios in Europe.

Asked if he had looked to other attacking models – including Barcelona’s former front three of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar – for inspiration, Solskjaer was quick to reference United’s rich attacking heritage.

“It’s not new for United,” the Norwegian said.

“Did you not watch Rooney, Ronaldo and Tevez when they were playing, when Sir Alex Ferguson gave them some freedom but within a framework and structure? So we do work a lot on patterns and positions and where we want the players to be.

“But within that we understand that you might pop up on the right or the left, or be in different positions. Too often – last year and sometimes this year – we’ve had players who want to gravitate over to the left and play tippytappy football.

“That’s something we wanted to get rid of – we’ve been more progressive and more disciplined in our positions.”

Greenwood has 16 goals in all competitions and needs one more to become only the second teenager this century to hit double figures in a Premier League season after Rooney, who bagged 11 in his debut United campaign.

“I’ve said it many times, he can go as far as he wants,” said Solskjaer about Greenwood. “He has the talent to go so far and is creating chances himself.

“Our job is to get him into positions where he can finish, because he does hit the target.

“He’ll make the goalkeeper have to work, so if we keep on giving him chances he will score more goals for us.”
