REDS FAN ‘BEAST’ AKINFENWA GETS HIT UP BY JURGEN

- BY MIKE WALTERS

LIVERPOOL boss Jurgen Klopp congratulated ‘The Beast’ Adebayo Akinfenwa after he helped Wycombe Wanderers complete their fairytale promotion to the Championship.

Four years ago, after scoring for AFC Wimbledon at Wembley in his final appearance for the Crazy Gang, Akinfenwa advertised himself as a gun for hire on live television.

He told interested club bosses to “hit me up on WhatsApp and get me a job” because he was “technically unemployed”.

The strongest man in football came off the bench to help the Chairboys into English football’s second tier for the first time in their 133-year history in Monday’s 2-1 win over Oxford in the League One play-off final.

And after his cameo at Wembley, Liverpool fan Akinfenwa, 38, said: “Let me tell you something, the only person who can hit me up on WhatsApp this time is Klopp – so we can celebrate together.”

And Liverpool’s Premier

League-winning messiah, who has brought the title back to Anfield after a 30-year drought, duly obliged, sending Akinfenwa a congratulatory video message (left).

The Reds boss said: “Congratulations. I watched the game and I didn’t see the post-match interviews but my players told me you want to get in contact on WhatsApp.

“I’m pretty sure you were your whole life at least a Championship player, and now finally you are there. Well done. Great, great victory.

“Even in these strange times I hope you celebrate, appropriately!”

The Liverpool manager wasn’t the only person to get in touch from the champions. Virgil van Dijk tweeted: “What a guy! Congrats big man!”

Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth, who saved the club from relegation from the Football League six years ago, thanked Martin O’Neill, who led the club out of non-league football 27 years ago.

He said: “Martin O’Neill has been fantastic. He was the legend who brought this club into the Football League.”
