Victims deserve medal

-

■ Today marks the 75th anniversary of Operation Trinity – the first detonation of a nuclear device. This was followed with the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. These events led to a proliferation of nuclear weapons-testing around the world.

The UK’s testing programme caused suffering to the inhabitants of Christmas Island. Many of the 22,000 British servicemen involved died from unexplained illnesses. The British Nuclear Veterans Association is campaigning for the Government to recognise their sacrifice by awarding them a medal. Colin Moir, Peterhead, Aberdeenshire
