LEEDS UNITED were facing a player exodus as Manchester United stepped up their pursuit of England defender Rio Ferdinand while Liverpool were close to agreeing terms with Elland Road midfielder Lee Bowyer. New boss Terry Venables wanted Valencia’s Roberto Ayala to replace Ferdinand. United did eventually sign Ferdinand but Liverpool abandoned the Bowyer deal at the last minute.
