Majorca shuts bars after Brits run riot

- BY ADAM ASPINALL

MAGALUF’S nightlife strip has been closed after “disgraceful” British holidaymakers flouted coronavirus rules.

Videos posted online showed louts climbing on cars and ignoring social distancing in Majorca at the weekend.

Balearic Islands’ tourism minister Iago Negueruela yesterday moved swiftly to shut the street, called Punta Ballena.

He said: “If tourists are not prepared to obey these rules then we ask them not to come.

“In the situation we find ourselves in, which is especially complex in health terms, we don’t want this type of tourist.”

The closure order also affects two party strips in the Palma area, Calle del Jamon, popular with Germans, and Calle de la Cerveza, which translates as Beer Street in English.

The closures are not expected to be lifted until after the summer season finishes in September.

British and Irish tourists were informed about the closures by their hotels. The regional government is also expected to ask tour operators to advise holidaymakers who have yet to arrive.

Bar owners on Punta Ballena said yesterday they expected bars, clubs and restaurants to be shut by midnight.

Meanwhile, tourists on the Spanish mainland had to wear masks on beaches from yesterday and could only remove them to swim or while close to family members.
