Glow Up: Britain’s Next Make-Up Star, BBC2 ★★★

Just in case lockdown wasn’t already making it hard enough for us to know what day it is, BBC2 decided to throw some Christmas-themed programming into the mix last night.

In the excellent David Tennant and Jessica Hynes comedy drama There

She Goes, parents Simon and Emily were having to pretend it was Christmas for the sake of their learning-disabled daughter Rosie. Before that, some amateur facepainters were competing for the chance to work on a festive advert for JD Sports.

This was Glow Up: Britain’s Next Make-Up Star. And if, like me, you are struggling to name any of Britain’s

existing make-up stars, this may not be the show for you.

To summarise, lots of young and trendy people who didn’t get enough time with the craft box at school gather together in a giant make-up studio and attempt to recreate old David Bowie album covers.

All the while, a bloke with a Poirot moustache and a lady who does Leslie “Ding Dong” Phillips impressions look on disapprovingly and

Stacey Dooley walks around with her hands in her pockets telling the

contestants how many minutes they’ve got left.

It’s basically a beauty version of MasterChef, only with less shouting.

And if you think I’m using mockery in an attempt to deflect attention from my ignorance and glaring lack of artistic flair, you’re probably right.

Sadly, there are only so many times I can listen to adults saying things like “slay”, “fierce” and “on point” before I make up my mind to switch off.

Still, to end on positive note, Merry Christmas everyone.
