COSTLY Having a baby
WOMEN lose out on £620million going to their final pension funds a year, due to lower contributions during maternity leave, analysis reveals.
They also lose £1.7billion in earnings each year when they are away from work.
On average, employers pay women 20 weeks of full pay during maternity leave, after which salary levels are often reduced.
A woman on £30,000 having children at the ages of 28 and 30, taking the average 32 weeks maternity leave, would lose almost £9,000 in salary and £3,000 from her pension.
If she took a full year, it would be almost £30k in salary and £10k pension.
Direct Line Life Insurance, behind the analysis, said many women “underestimate” the financial impact of maternity leave.
Price for ‘vintage’ look
DID you miss Glastonbury this year? Not to worry! Now you can achieve that post-festival trainer filth for a fraction of the price.
Converse is charging £70 for a ready-muddied pair of Chuck Taylor All Stars – that’s £20 more than the same style in pristine white.
The footwear giant says the sneakers are designed to provide “a vintage look, straight out of the box” by skipping the breaking-in period.
In grey or navy, the canvas tops, laces and trim have been treated to look like the dirt is ingrained.
Some people were unimpressed, with one wag joking: “Heck, for half that you can walk through my front yard and get a custom job.”
Another said: “Could get them for £5 in charity shops looking better.”
And Micha Frazer-Carroll, of online magazine gal-dem.com, said: “The worst part is they are actually about double the amount of dirty you’d ever want ur converse to be.”
