No Moore smiles for the Latics

- BRAVE BATTLE BY STEVE BATES

WIGAN were plunged into yet more turmoil as they were relegated after a brave battle with highflying Fulham.

Paul Cook’s stars – needing a victory to stave off the drop – looked to be in dreamland after striker Kieffer Moore headed Latics into a 27th-minute lead in a fiercely fought contest at the DW Stadium.

But Neeskens Kebano equalised with a stunning free-kick moments after the break to cancel out their lead.

With the EFL’s 12-point deduction for going into administration applied at the final whistle, a draw wasn’t enough for Wigan’s players who sank to their knees in despair.

Now they must rely on an appeal hearing on July 31 when the club’s Hong Kong owners will claim ‘force majeure’ put the club into administration due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The draw wasn’t enough for Fulham to grab an automatic promotion spot either with Scott Parker’s men now facing play-off torture.

Wigan gave it everything and in a hectic last 10 minutes both sides threw everything to try and find a winner. But a draw wasn’t enough to save the Latics.
