- How To Lose Weight Well: Summer Special, C4 ★★★

Shedding a bit of excess timber is never a bad idea, so I wouldn’t brand Channel 4’s health initiative last night a completely pointless enterprise.

However, if doctors Xand van Tulleken and Helen Lawal tried to run a similar experiment at this point in the summer holidays you’d have to say “good luck with that”. The upcoming social events their dieters wanted to get in shape for had “Covid cancellation danger” written all over them.

We had two young women who wanted to fit into their dresses for a posh works party at a large hotel.

Then there was a footballing duo who wanted to tone up for an indoor pool party with a big group of pals.

And to cap it all, we had a couple of grandmothers who wanted to get beach body ready for an upcoming trip to Ibiza.

I mean, technically I suppose you could still go to Ibiza.

The big danger would be putting all the weight back on when you’re sitting around in quarantine for two weeks on your return. To be fair, if you did want to lose weight for other reasons, there were some good ideas here – although given everything we know about crash diets, I’d probably swerve those.

I particularly liked the look of the Summer Sandwich diet and the South American and Greek diets.

I’m with Xand when it comes to detox tea though.

Well, if it doesn’t have milk in it and come with a Ginger Nut or two, it’s not really tea is it?
