SAD SULLIVAN TEARS IT UP

RYDER CUP ACE STORMS TO VICTORY

- EMOTIONAL BY NEIL McLEMAN FRUSTRATED

ANDY SULLIVAN fought back tears as he dedicated his victory at the English Championship to his late brotherin-law and a friend.

The Ryder Cup star carded a finalround 65 at Hanbury Manor to finish on 27 under par – seven shots clear of Spaniard Adrian Otaegui.

The win was his first on the European Tour since the 2015 Portugal Masters. And in the last two years, the Nuneaton pro has lost both his fiancee Flo’s brother and close friend Tom Ford.

“I can’t remember too much about the emotions in my first three wins but I was fighting the tears back down the last three holes,” said Sullivan. “I think it was just the people who have missed it for me. My brother-in-law – he was only 24 years old and got taken from us.

“It means a lot for me to do it for him today. And a good friend of mine has passed as well.”

It was the first win for Sullivan, 34, since the arrival of his two-year-old son Arthur. “It is just nice for my family – to win for my little boy,” he said. “It is just nice for me that I can say he has seen me win.”

Tiger woods was satisfied with his final round at the US PGA as he finished with a three-under-par 67 to finish one under par at Harding Park in California.

Woods said: “My body responded well this week so I’m very pleased. I just hope to play better when the weather is better.”

Byeong Hun An earned the distinction of making a hole-in-one on the final day of a major as he aced the 11th at Harding Park.

Former world No. 1 Justin Spieth showed a welcome return to form as he posted a three-under-par 67 at the Californian course.

But his pal Justin Thomas admitted that he apologised to him after the third round.

“Walking off 18, he’s like, ‘I’m sorry, man. I just didn’t really give you any momentum,’ and that’s a good friend trying to take the blame,” Thomas said.
