CLASSIC Levi’s 501 jeans have been voted the most iconic fashion item ever.

The timeless casuals, first made for US cowboys, lumberjacks and railroad workers back in 1873, took all the competition from top designer labels in their strides.

They even pushed Mary Quant’s Swinging Sixties-defining mini into second place.

Clothing company Levi’s Strauss also took third place with its must-have denim jacket.

Ugg boots came fourth and Fred Perry polo shirts took fifth place in the poll of 2,000 adults to find the most highly rated statement fashion pieces.

Barbour wax jackets were sixth, Louis Vuitton luggage bagged seventh place, Ralph Lauren polo shirts were eighth, Nike Air max trainers crossed the finishing line in ninth and trendy Ray-Ban Wayfarers sunglasses completed the top ten.

Christian Louboutin’s signature red-soled stilettos were 14th, but bizarrely – and as our Top 40 panel reveals – the killer heels were just one place above comfy flat Crocs.

The good news is most Brits are not into throwaway fashion. Half of those polled said they would happily wear vintage clothing.

Six out of 10 said they would rather have a small selection of expensive couture clothes than a wardrobe stuffed with cheap, new items. And three out of 10 revealed they have trawled charity shops for classic pieces in the survey for fashion firm Farfetch.

Boss Thomas Berry said: “Now more than ever customers want to make considered purchases that will stand the test of time.“
