HENDRICK IN BIG COUNTRY

- BY IAN MURTAGH

JEFF HENDRICK is ready to become Mr Big after signing a four-year contract with Newcastle United.

The Republic of Ireland ace has swapped life at Burnley for a career at a club always in the spotlight.

And he reckons life will never be the same after joining the Magpies on a free transfer.

“It’s a massive club and one of the best stadiums to play in so I just want to get playing there,” admitted Hendrick (top), who could make his debut in a friendly against Crewe tonight.

“It’s going to be different for me, the demands of a bigger stadium, the crowd, how big the club is.

“So I’ve got to take that on and keep pushing myself and striving to get better.”

Hendrick’s arrival completes a successful few days for Toon boss Steve Bruce (inset), who persuaded Matty Longstaff to sign a new contract at his hometown club after the 20-year-old looked certain to go.

“Jeff is someone I’ve admired for a long time,” said Bruce. “I watched him when he was at Derby, then he went to Burnley and I missed out then because I couldn’t afford him.

“He’s an experienced international who can play all across the midfield.

“He’ll be a big asset to us on and off the pitch.

“At the age of 28, it’s a wonderful time to get somebody. He’s a really fit boy and it’s the peak of his career.”

But Newcastle have a fight on their hands to hang on to midfielder Isaac Hayden, 25, who has 12 months left on his contract and is unlikely to sign a new deal at St James’ Park.
