SIRO? I’D RATHER BE TOON HERO

Hendrick: It was exciting being linked with Milan but now I want to repay Bruce’s faith in me

- BY DAVE ARMITAGE

JEFF HENDRICK tuned into a little bit of park life before clinching his dream move to Newcastle.

The Republic of Ireland star admits everything was a blur as clubs including AC Milan chased his signature.

The midfielder had run down his contract at Burnley and found himself in demand so kept fit by training in his local park.

Hendrick 28, said: “It was a nice feeling when I was told AC Milan were interested. Everyone knows how massive that club is so it gave me a real confidence boost.

“But I’m really glad to have come here and can’t wait to get started. It’s been strange the last couple of months.

“I got myself a ball and some cones and went down the local park. There were people with dogs walking around, but it was fine. The main thing for me was to keep ticking over.” Hendrick believes he can help Newcastle secure a top-10 spot with European football a not too distant hope.

He added: “I’m delighted. This is a massive club and once the offer became solid then this is where I wanted to come.

“I don’t see why we can’t finish in the top half. I think everybody here would want that so it’s up to us to do it.

“We need to get a few points on board early then see where we head in the table. This club should aim for a top-10 finish and then try to improve each year.”

He is prepared for the intensity of playing for a fervent Geordie support

with the team the focus of a whole city.

Hendrick (right) said: “I’m looking forward to that. It’s good to have demands put on you. It keeps you honest.

“I enjoy full stadiums. Big stadiums probably bring the best out of me so I can’t wait to play here when it’s full.

“I talked to Steve Bruce (above) on the phone and he was brilliant. Now it’s my turn to repay him.”
