Gong won by a hero of the Zulu War sells for £45,000
DECORATED Capt Wardell
THE medal of a hero who died in a massacre in the 1879 Zulu War in South Africa has sold for £45,000.
Captain George Wardell was making a final stand with his regiment when the camp in Isandlwana was overrun by Zulus.
He was among more than 1,300 British and colonial troops who perished at the hands of a force of 20,000 Zulus.
Capt Wardell was born in Canada in 1840 and moved to England to train at Kensington School.
DESPERATE
Capt Wardell saw service in Malta and Gibraltar before embarking for South Africa in 1875.
He joined 24th Battalion of Foot and had many skirmishes with Zulus in the lead-up to his death at the foot of Isandlwana Hill.
Some Natal Carbineers who escaped recounted: “He was surrounded by his company, making a most desperate stand against the savage foe.”
His South Africa 1877-79 medal sparked a bidding war when it was sold by London auctioneers Dix Noonan Webb, fetching double the estimate.

Carl set for mountain bike ride
I’M A Celebrity... get me out of this bog, says superbike legend Carl Fogarty as he flounders about in the mud after going over the handlebars during a cycle ride.
Carl, 55, who was King of the Jungle in the 2014 I‘m A Celebrity series, was mountain-biking at Longridge Fells in Lancashire when he took a tumble.
He won four Superbike Championships in the 1990s, but said he went over the bars of his bicycle “like Superman”, adding: “My bike’s disappeared.”
