Track is declared unsafe

- BY DAVID YATES

THE British Horseracing Authority last night suspended jump racing at Southwell with immediate effect after two more horses lost their lives at the Rolleston track.

A spate of six equine fatalities between July 30 and August 24 — National Hunt racing had returned from the coronavirus blackout on July 1 — triggered a BHA inquiry.

But the sport’s governing body and Southwell’s owner, Arena Racing Company, were forced to take swift ction afte after Day Of R Roses and C Cillian’s Well (left) s suffered f fatal falls at the meeting to take the death toll to eight.

“The BHA and ARC met earlier this week and agreed a series of immediate measures which were put in place for this evening’s meeting,” BHA Chief Regulatory Officer Brant Dunshea said last night.

“The course was inspected prior to racing by a BHA course inspector and was deemed fit to race. Pre-race checks were also carried out on all horses competing by BHA veterinary officers.

“In the sad event of two further fatalities, we have jointly decided with ARC to suspend Jump racing at Southwell until further notice whilst we complete a detailed investigation.”

While the review is underway, Southwell’s jump fixtures will be re-scheduled at alternative courses.
