The interview

-

Do your research. Employers want to know you are genuinely enthusiastic and interested in their company and this job, not just any job. Visit their website to get the lowdown on the firm’s background, projects, news and awards.

2

Act interested. You can have an outstanding CV but bosses want to see that you are engaged and that you really want the job.

3

Ask questions. This is an easy way to show you are interested and engaged. The more you turn the interview into a conversation, the more relaxed you will feel.

4

Dress to impress

Taking care with your appearance gives the impression you will do the same with your work – a sloppy outfit equals a sloppy attitude. Your interview outfit shows that you take pride in your appearance, are serious about your interest in the role and that you respect the interviewer.

Regardless of the workplace dress code, go for more formal than you would on a working day.

For women this could mean a smart dress or suit, while men should usually opt for a suit and tie or at least smart trousers and shirt.

Clean and polished shoes are a must.

Trainers, flip-flops and excessively high heels are a big no-no.

When it comes to jewellery, stick with subtle pieces. Make sure you hair is tidy and your breath is fresh.

Be professional. It’s fine to be friendly but you always have to keep in mind why you are here – to convince the person interviewing you that you are right for the job. Don’t get over familiar and give information that is not relevant to the interview. 6

Don’t lie. Be honest about your qualifications, skills and achievements as firms will find out about these in background checks or, even worse, you could get caught out once you’ve started. But do explain what you will bring to this role – for each skill you say you possess, have a reason why it makes you appropriate for the job and provide evidence and examples to back up skills you say you have.

7

Give yourself the best start. Preparation for an interview is vital but also ensure you get a good night’s sleep, drink plenty of water and eat properly before an interview, so that you are sharp and alert. Take some deep breaths just before it starts, think positively to help calm your nerves and remember to smile.
