STEVE BRUCE’S new blood gave Newcastle a flying start and he told owner Mike Ashley: That’s what you get for flexing your muscles in the market.

Ashley (right) was captured on TV with a smile as wide as the Tyne as debutants Callum Wilson and Jeff Hendrick fired the Toon to a 2-0 win at West Ham. The arrivals of Wilson,

Hendrick, Jamal Lewis and Ryan Fraser have given Bruce’s squad renewed depth and the Newcastle manager ger said of Ashley’s reaction: ion: “Good – I hope he enjoyed it and he e deserves to enjoy it, too.

“It helps that at the right time he flexed his muscles, s, the players are here ere and we have seen the benefit of them.”

Bruce also said the Toon decided ded d to b buy u y British in the close season – to avoid the risk of overseas signings taking time to settle – and the policy has alrea already paid handsome di dividends.

The Magpies boss ( left) said: “Everybody concerned in the club agreed with m me that at th this particular

time, with the big, huge loss that everyone has incurred, we need people who can play in the Premier League. We have all agreed that is the best way forward. The proven quality at this level takes away the risk.

“How often have we seen a player from abroad take time to adjust, get used to the climate, getting used to this, to that? We needed people who could hit the ground running and on today’s evidence, I think we were right.

“I tried to take Callum from Coventry years ago. I’ve watched his career and there’s something about the lad which I enjoy watching.

“He moves well, he’s a goalscorer, he works tirelessly for the team and I am delighted to have got him. He wanted to play for Newcastle, which always helps.

“Jeff gave us balance. I’ve been a big admirer of his for a long time. He smashed his shot in the top corner, he will remember that for a long time.”
