TEDDY FLAIR MAKES LAMBERT CUDDLY
Bishop answers boss’s prayers after six year wait
TEDDY BISHOP scored his first goal in six years as Wigan’s woes continued.
The Ipswich midfielder, had not found the net since a standout debut season as an 18-year-old.
That saw him linked with Liverpool but a succession of bad injuries stalled his progress.
Town boss Paul Lambert said: “He needs to play game after game but we are pleased with the start he has made this season.
“He has a lovely touch of the ball and great instinct.
The way he plays by driving at the defence from the middle of the pitch is excellent. It would be great for him to add more goals.”
Bishop, who also hit a post later on, headed home from Freddie Sears’ cross in the 11th minute.
And substitute Gwion Edwards sealed victory with a smart turn and shot 10 minutes from time.
“I thought we played some very good football,” added Lambert. “We haven’t played league football for six months, so to be producing some of the football we are is very encouraging.
“The midfield three were excellent. Jon Nolan was outstanding and is getting better. At the back we looked solid as well.”
John Sheridan, who left Irish club Waterford to become the Latics’ new boss on Friday, is fully aware he has a big job on his hands. Wigan went into administration in July and the 12- point deduction that followed saw them relegated from the Championship on the final day.
Fourteen players then departed, including Kieffer Moore and Antonee Robinson, leav ing Sheridan with a threadbare squad.
The former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder knew it could have been a different story had his side scored first however.
Defender Emeka Obi failed to convert two free headers and Joe Garner saw an overhead kick bounce back off the bar with the game goalless.
Sheridan said: “We possibly should have been two up – we created some great opportunities.
“The first goal changes the outcome of games so often and who knows what might have happened?
“But while we were disappointed to go into half-time 1-0 down, in the second half we just never got going.
“Wigan have been a really good team for the last two or three years and have played some really good football and to lose a huge chunk of what made all that success is difficult.
“But I don’t want to keep bringing that up, or the administration. It’s where we are and hopefully I’ll be able to bring in one or two.”
