RODRIGO SAYS SORRY TO FANS FOR SPOT OF WOE

- BY DAVID MADDOCK

RECORD signing Rodrigo offered a direct apology to Leeds fans after his mistake decided a seven-goal thriller at Anfield.

The Premier League newcomers were within touching distance of a great point at the fortress home of the champions, when the £27million striker dangled out a leg (right) to gift the Reds a penalty.

Mo Salah superbly converted from the spot for a second time in the match to complete a wonderful hat-trick and give his side all the spoils.

But Spain star Rodrigo vowed to his club’s fans: “I am very sad with the penalty, and I’ll work harder so it doesn’t happen again.” Yet, the former Bolton forward, who became Leeds’ biggest money signing when they bought him from Valencia in the summer, need not worry about his mistake.

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa was in forgiving mood when he insisted – in typically idiosyncratic style – the blame for defeat must lie collectively. And the Argentine said he had seen enough from his side to be enthused about their Premier League challenge.

“‘You can’t blame one player for the defeat, even if he made an error – there is no direct relationship between the foul by Rodrigo and the result. There are other actions that create unbalance,” he said.

“The players were calm, they played a serene game and went into it confidently. Confidence means that you shouldn’t be afraid and also the team-mates help each other not to be nervous.

“When you know your team-mates are there to back you up it gives you extra confidence and motivates you. That is important for us.”
