A LORRY careered down a suburban street before ploughing into a house, leaving the driver dead and a boy of 11 fighting for his life in hospital

Four other people were injured, two of them needing hospital treatment, in the horrific crash in Kidbrooke, South East London, at 8am yesterday. The lorry hit four cars as it ran out of control.

The man who died at the scene was aged 29, and the boy has “life threatening” injuries, the Met Police said.

Nobody in the house was injured, but the owner, 55-year-old barber Niko, said his son was “seconds away” from being killed as he made his way downstairs to make a hot drink.

Niko, whose wife was out at work when the crash happened, said: “There was just dust and bricks everywhere. I

“I was in my bedroom directly above it. My first thought was to get out the house with my two sons. I feel very lucky to be alive. It’s tragic that someone died.

“I think the child that was injured was in a car with their dad possibly. I really hope they are OK. At the end of the day this is just a house. It’s bricks and mortar. “I’m in shock. I feel numb.” Neighbour Rosie Chadha, 37, was told the driver of the lorry had been gesturing to a car in front to get out the way.

She said: “One woman said she was driving in front of him and he was

gesturing for her to move out the way and so she pulled over. Maybe his brakes weren’t working. I heard a huge rumbling and the sound of a house collapsing.”

Kate Hurst, 38, a lawyer, helped the injured. She said: “I heard the lorry going over the speed bumps at a fantastic rate and the noise of it going into the house was horrendous.

“There was one guy covered in blood, I was just trying to calm him.

“His car was one of the cars that was smouldering. There was lots of petrol on the floor, too. “People were in complete shock.” Police cordoned off the street as they tried to piece together what happened. Det Con Neil Webb said: “This was a traumatic incident.”
