McGinley tipping a Rahm raid on Major trophies

- BY NEIL McLEMAN

JON RAHM will break away from the other top stars and “dominate” world golf by winning multiple Majors, predicts Paul McGinley.

World No.1 Dustin Johnson is the current form player after two wins and two runners-up finishes in his last four events.

Four others – Rahm, Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas and the injured Brooks Koepka – also topped the rankings this year. But former Ryder Cup captain McGinley sees the Spaniard (above) as the complete player and the best on the planet.

“Those top five players in the world now are starting to separate themselves a little bit – and you could even put Bryson DeChambeau in there,” said the Legends Tour ambassador.

“There are a lot of good players at the top of the game, probably more than there’s been for a decade.

“But Rahm is the guy I think is going to dominate and raise himself above the rest in the coming years. He ticks all the boxes. I don’t see any weaknesses in his game. And because he’s earlier in his career, that ambition’s really raw and intense and is certainly driving him at the moment. I expect him to win some Major championships soon.”

Rahm, 25, became the 24th man to top the rankings after winning The Memorial in July. His second two-week reign was ended by Johnson when he won the Northern Trust last month.

The World No.2 said: “It’s been a really cool year for golf because you’ve had Brooks, Rory, me, JT and Dustin as No.1s in the world, five changes.

“We’re at a point where, any given week, any of us who plays good and wins will get to the No.1 spot. It’s a good age for golf.”

Rahm, who finished third at Pebble Beach last year, added: “I’ve always thought the US Open is the type of golf course I can win on.

“Plus, to be possibly the first Spanish player to win a US Open... that would be amazing.”
