TIGER STING FOR LEEDS

Wilks is star of show to make life Ell for his former team

LEEDS were embarrassingly dumped out of the Carabao Cup by League One Hull at Elland Road.

Alfie Jones scored the decisive penalty in the shootout (celebrating, right) after Jamie Shackleton’s effort was saved by Matt Ingram.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side did not deserve to take it to penalties when Ezgjan Alioski equalised in the third minute of stoppage time.

But justice was done and the Tigers have a third-round tie at West Ham next week.

Leeds were disappointing in every department. Too many of their senior players did not perform to help out their younger team-mates.

In Mallik Wilks, Hull had the outstanding player on the pitch. He was offloaded by Leeds last year having made just one substitute appearance in four seasons, yet he outshone United’s record £ 26million signing Rodrigo.

Bielsa helped the visitors by fielding a completely-different line-up from that in Saturday’s brave defeat at Liverpool.

Leeds were disjointed as a consequence and Hull capitalised to open the scoring after five minutes. Wi lks, who joined permanent ly from Barnsley in the summer, was allowed too much time and space and his shot from the edge of the D was deflected home.

Bielsa gave Charlie Cresswell his debut and the 17-year-old defender, the son of former Leeds and Sheffield United striker Richard, missed a chance to equalise when he headed wide from a corner.

Leeds were struggling to contain Wilks, who had a couple of efforts saved by Francisco Casilla and another one blocked.

Their anaemic display was summed up when Alioski skied a decent chance in front of goal.

It was all Hull and Keane Lewis-Potter cut inside from the left and shot narrowly wide, then Jones headed just over.

Greg Docherty should have made sure for Hull, but his shot was too close to Casilla. They were made to pay when Alioski rifled home after the Tigers failed to clear a corner.

Casilla 6, Shackleton 5, Cresswell 5, Davis 5, Douglas 6, Casey 6 (Struijk 46, 5), Poveda 5, Bogusz 6 (Gotts 78, 5), Roberts 4, Alioski 4, Rodrigo 5

Ingram 6, Coyle 6, Jones 7, McLoughlin 7, Elder 6, Batty 6, Doherty 6, Scott 7, Honeyman 7 (Jones 81, 6), Lewis-Potter 7 (Mayer 46, 6), Wilks 8 (Chadwick 72, 6)
