Robinson followed through on the Icelandic winger, who was carried off with a knee injury.

It marred what was only Burnley’s second win from their last nine League Cup ties and Dyche was disappointed referee Paul Tierney did not even give a foul.

“It was a really poor tackle,” said the Clarets boss, whose side face Millwall next week in the third round. “The linesman was four or five yards away and he’s given nothing, the ref ’s given nothing and there’s no VAR. It was bizarre.”

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder admitted: “I’ve not see the challenge back, but I’ve been told it was a little bit near the mark.”

The Blades took the lead after four minutes when Ollie Norwood played in Max Lowe and he crossed for David McGoldrick to tuck home.

Robinson then poleaxed Gudmundsson and his replacement Erik Pieters created a great chance for Robbie Brady, only for the Irishman to hit the post.

Burnley deservedly equalised on 67 minutes when Jay Rodriguez expertly chested Matt Lowton’s cross on for Matej Vydra to score.

An Oli McBurnie shot was then deflected and another stopped by Nick Pope to set up the shoot-out.

But Pope saved from McBurnie and Brady slotted in the winner.

Pope 8, Lowton 7, Dunne 6, Long 6, Taylor 6, Gudmundsson 6 (Pieters 15, 6), Westwood 6 (Benson 75, 6), Brownhill 6, Brady 6, Rodriguez 7 (Wood 81), Vydra 7.

Foderingham 6, Ampadu 7, Jagielka 6, Robinson 5, Bogle 6 (Basham 86), Berge 6, Norwood 7, Osborn 6, Lowe 7, McGoldrick 7 (McBurnie 62, 6), Burke 6 (Sharp 62, 6)
