One rule for us, another for MPs

- Edited by Diane Hughesdon, South London

Ministers want us to snitch on neighbours and family so they can give us huge fines for breaking coronavirus rules, but Tory MP Danny Kruger was photographed travelling on a train without a mask, then moaned about being exposed (Mirror, Sept 22).

Maybe he should ask his pal Boris Johnson to be exempted from the consequences, like the PM’s aide Dominic Cummings.

How can we take this Government seriously when Johnson’s MPs are flouting their own rules? This individual could have caught the virus en route, taken it into Parliament and infected the entire house without knowing it. Will he be fined or sacked? No. Just another example of one rule for the masses and none for the rule makers.

While we all have a social obligation to each other to stop the spread of Covid-19, I believe the Government’s idea that we should snitch on neighbours for breaking the rules has connotations beyond this pandemic.

We only have to look back to what happened in Europe in the last century.

The pandemic is killing thousands of people around the world and having longterm effects on many more survivors.

My sister caught it back in March and she is still recovering, so we all have to protect and look out for each other but, in my view, this is a step too far. Audrey Duncan Brecon, Powys

I fully believe that we should all follow the rules to try and prevent Covid- 19 spreading, but Boris Johnson has done nothing about removing Dominic Cummings who broke them by travelling to Durham. I fully believe if he’d got rid of Cummings more people would be willing to comply which puts the onus on Boris to bring this problem under control. Unless he does this, things will only get worse.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock says it is our duty to report people breaking the law over Covid restrictions. Does this mean they will take it seriously this time, or will it be like it was when Cummings broke the first lockdown and nothing was done because he was one of the elite? Or do the rules only apply to the poor?

It makes my blood boil that after three months of national lockdown and the abject failure of test and trace, many places in the UK are facing another round of lockdown.

My own area was put under new restrictions yesterday. I remember

Boris Johnson saying we will have a “world beating” testing system by June 1. It’s nearly October with no sign of the virus being halted and thousands unable to get tests.

How long are people going to sit back and let Boris dictate the rules when Dominic Cummings is still in his job?

So, while we are told we should inform on our neighbours who flout the rules, a Tory MP caught without a mask on public transport says sorry he forgot and nothing happens. Is it any wonder the virus is rife when we can’t trust our leaders to follow their own rules? K Sharp, Atherton, Gtr Manchester

As an 82-year-old woman who, with her friends, has obeyed all the coronavirus rules even though it’s a big sacrifice for us in our twilight years, I’m angry and frustrated at all the idiots ignoring all the restrictions and congregating without social distancing or masks.

They will put us into another lockdown which is so much harder for the old, especially if living alone.
