IAN HYLAND Celebrity Karaoke Club, ITV2

On last night’s telly

-

Although the pitch for this new show seemed fairly straightforward, it did contain a hint towards a potential flaw.

“Celebrities, a free bar and the world’s best karaoke machine – what could possibly go wrong?”

The answer being? They might get hold of a microphone and start ruining some of your favourite songs.

Still, we should give ITV some credit. The network has clearly heeded criticism and consigned The X Factor: Celebrity to its natural home – 10pm on ITV2 on a Wednesday night.

It’s not called The X Factor any more but it’s basically the same idea.

A bunch of “celebrities”, with wildly varying degrees of fame and vocal talent, gather together to warble along to some backing tracks.

Instead of performing in front of Simon Cowell and disinterested pals in his Los Angeles garden, they sing for each other and drink for Britain in a purpose-built karaoke bar.

The other big difference is that they also judge each other.

Which means they get to vote each other off.

Which means the minute someone like Tallia Storm comes in boasting about how Elton John personally asked them to sing at one of his gigs when they were just 13, you know they are going to get the boot no matter how bad anyone else is. And so it proved.

I’m not saying I agreed with the motives of Tallia’s fellow contestants, but it did add a welcome shot of mischief to proceedings.

In which case, file this show under Second Lockdown Guilty Pleasures.
