Confusion over new Covid rules
BORIS Johnson has a nerve blaming us for the increase in the R rate which has led to the latest restrictions. The main reason rules are being flouted is because of his refusal to sack his mate Dominic Cummings. On top of that, every day, we see MPs on our screens either touching elbows or standing very close to others, sometimes without wearing a mask.
Getting rid of Cummings would go a long way to encourage all of us to obey the vital laws and avoid thousands more Covid-19 deaths. Isn’t a prime minister’s first duty to the nation, not to himself and his political cronies? For all our sakes, please, for once, do the right thing. Ted Lyon, Sandown, Isle of Wight
We have to get on top of this pandemic but we will close pubs and restaurants at 10pm because as we all know the virus only comes out at night.
Remember we said get back to work in your offices? Well, you can forget about that for the next six months.
I fear we are heading for some sort of martial law as there was a veiled threat in Boris Johnson’s speech mentioning the possible use of the Army to enforce these new restrictions. God help us all with this shower in charge. James Rooney, Elgin, Moray
Isn’t it time we had a government of national unity to make a difference to the response to the pandemic?
Surely it’s obvious to everyone that Boris and his cabinet of incompetents ncompeo aren’t up to the job and are consistently ly behind the curve in every response they’ve made. Surely it was a mistake to open pubs and restaurants as the more alcohol is consumed, inhibitions decrease and people forget responsibilities.
Until we get someone in charge who is able to make the correct decisions, this virus will continue to proliferate.

I don’t very often agree with Tory MPs. However, I must agree with the head of the influential 1922 Committee, Sir Graham Brady, as well as former head of the Supreme Court, Lady Hale, that the British public are not children and are not happy being led by a dictatorial PM and his cronies who, it seems, rule by decree.
This is a democracy and all new laws and restrictions concerning coronavirus should be subjected to a parliamentary vote.
R Tandy, Liverpool
I am certainly very far from being a Tory lover and I detest a lot of what Boris Johnson has done so far. But he is on a hiding to nothing and being cruelly disregarded by the self-opinionated idiots within our community.
All credit to the man for trying his best in what would be a terrible situation for any government to deal with. But I feel his pleas to follow the rules will fall on deaf ears. The ‘covidiots’ will ignore them and blame him for their own shortcomings when people continue to die.

Am I the only one that thinks new restrictions are now a waste of time? The virus is clearly among us – it’s in our towns, cities, schools and workplaces. We need a new plan that puts all resources to protecting the elderly, vulnerable and care workers. We can have the inquiry about how the Government was unable to control it later. David Williams, Wigan
What a farce. If I’m in an area with restrictions I can’t look after my grandchildren who live nearby if they are over 14 but I can drive to another area to look after my other grandchildren who are under 14. All this confusion is better than payin paying to watch a Whitehall farce. Reme Remember them, anyone?
