MORE TOON GOALS FOR JOELINTON

- BY IAN WHITTELL

JOELINTON continued to terrorise lower-league defences as Newcastle coasted into the last 16 of the Carabao Cup against 10-man Morecambe.

The £40million Brazilian forward helped himself to two goals as Steve Bruce’s side set up a fourth-round trip to Newport where victory will carry the Toon into the quarter-finals.

The brace took Joelinton to six goals in 13 months on Tyneside, although four of them have come here and in cup ties last season against Rochdale and Oxford.

And even before Toumani Diagouraga was shown a red card in the 33rd minute for a late foul on the Magpies’ Sean Longstaff, this game was over.

Joelinton saw to o that by sweeping in an early square ball from Miguel Almiron after four minutes.

Almiron then rounded the keeper, from Jacob b Murphy’s brilliant through ball, for the second.

Murphy himself sped away on to Emil Krafth’s pass to make it 3-0 after 26 minutes. And two minutes before the sending off, Joelinton scored a wonderful curling chip over Mark Halstead from 25 yards.

By the time Isaac Hayden blasted one straight down the middle from long range in firsthalf stoppage-time, the League Two side were overwhelmed.

Jamaal Lascelles made it six when he headed in powerfully from Matt Ritchie’s 51st-minute corner. And Ritchie completed the rout – and Newcastle’s biggest win in 21 years – back heeling in right at the death.
