MICHAEL MICHAELMcINTYRE: McINTYRE: HAPPY & GLORIOUS BBC1, 9pm

SWINGING his arms and skipping across the stage in an ill-fitting suit, this is Michael McIntyre as we’ve come to know and love him.

His ‘ man-of-the-people’ routine, with clever observations that often leave him sweating as he darts around the stage, flicking his floppy hair around, has earned him millions of fans. Following the record-breaking success of Live and Laughing, Hello Wembley and Showtime, this is yet another belter of a comedy routine. Recorded last year at London’s O2 in front of 15,000 fans, he throws everything into this performance, making everyday life faceachingly hilarious.

If you want to know how best to pacify your children, Michael has the answer. Drugs. “Calpol is the drug of choice,” he explains, demonstrating how he and his wife practically hose the stuff into their kids’ faces when they’re ill. There’s a rundown of a disastrous date night with his wife, Kitty, when only his menu had the extortionate prices on it. “Catch of the day for £45? It had better be a mermaid.”

Michael also shows off his sizeable calf muscles and shares the news of his corrective shoes that “force me to walk like a normal person”. And there’s a funny skit on our addiction to technology, including the absolute thrill of receiving a Facetime call. Everything he says is wonderfully relatable, and though he might not be the edgiest of comedians, you cannot help but laugh an awful lot. Lord knows we all need a bit of ‘ happy & glorious’ right now.
