HARRY’S HORROR

Double leg break agony for Rhinos youngster

A HORROR injury to Harry Newman cast a shadow over Leeds’ comfortable win against Hull KR last night.

The 20-year-old centre was left screaming in agony after suffering a double leg break in a tackle.

He was given oxygen and treated for 10 minutes on the pitch before being taken to hospital.

Initial fears that he had also broken his hip proved unfounded. But Rhinos coach Richard Agar confirmed the he England youngster had snapped his tibia and fibula and could miss the he opening stages of next season.

He said: “We love him to bits and he’s a great young player with the world at his feet, so it’s a huge blow.”

X- rays are expected to show whether Newman needs to have the e leg pinned or whether it will heal in a cast. But Agar expects him to be out for between three and six months. “You could hear him in a lot of distress from the stands,” he added.

“Typical of Harry, he gave the thumbs up to us in the stand. He’s a great kid and a great player so it’s difficult to see him cop such an injury.”

Newman has been tipped for great things since making his Rhinos debut three years ago aged 17.

Last year he made such a sensational impact Leeds were happy to let captain and England centre Kallum Watkins leave for the NRL midway through the season. The

England Knight’s star billing was endorsed when Shaun Wane named him in his first full international squad earlier this year.

Team-mates were visibly shocked by the injury, with some saying they heard a crack when he went down in an innocuous tackle after 30 minutes.

But they recovered to steamroller Rovers, inflicting successive heavy beatings following last week’s Challenge Cup quarter-final win.

Ash Handley, who moved from the wing into Newman’s centre position, scored two tries, with Rhyse Martin adding a touchdown and six goals. The other Rhinos tryscorers were James Donaldson, Richie Myler ( left), Alex Mellor and Luke Briscoe.

Rovers, who made 11 changes from the cup tie starting line- up, scored through Jimmy Keinhorst, Ryan Brierley and Shaun Kenny-Dowall.
