MORECAMBE AND WISER

Wildig: We’ve learned from our mistakes

-

AARON WILDIG believes Morecambe can look forward again after putting a nightmare week behind them.

Derek Adams’ side headed to Southend after conceding 12 goals without reply – with the 7- 0 Carabao Cup drubbing to Newcastle coming on the heels of a 5- 0 humiliation against Cambridge.

Midfielder Wildig admits those bruising defeats left a cloud hanging over the club.

And there was a familiar feeling when new signing Liam Gibson put into his own net after just five minutes.

But the Shrimps turned it around and Wildig said: “It’s been a difficult week. There’s no beating around the bush, 12 goals conceded and none scored. This was a show of character today and when you concede so early that’s a proper kick in the teeth.

“You are walking back to the centre thinking ‘ what’s going on here?’. But after that we dominated the game, although we didn’t play the conditions too well.

“You feel like a bit of a cloud has come over this week after losing those two games. But in reality we have six points from nine including two away games and you just have to be positive and kick on. We’ve got good players and there’s no reason we shouldn’t look forward.”

Wildig (congratulated, below) brought Morecambe level 10 minutes after the break, and Adam Phillips wrapped up the win in the 73rd minute.

Defeat leaves Southend rock bottom without a win from their opening three league games.

And new signing Kyle Taylor – who arrived on loan from Bournemouth last week – admits that Mark Molesley’s side must grow up fast.

The midfielder said: “I don’t think we will get too down about the result.

“But after three losses it’s obvious we need to grow up a little bit and I don’t think we should really lose that game today, especially after going 1-0 up.

“We can’t feel sorry for ourselves, we have to pick ourselves up and go again. We’re all very hungry.”
