We don’t want vile meat deal

- Edited by

THE conditions in which cattle are bred on gigantic feedlots in America are appalling but come as no surprise (Mirror, September 29).

Earning a fast buck is first on the agenda in Trump’s America where there is no sympathy for these unfortunate animals. We can only hope our Government will not succumb to US pressure to import hormone injected meat and chlorinated chicken in any post-Brexit trade deal.

Many countries abuse and violate animals for profit and it will continue while there is money to be made.

The reason we have coronavirus is due to poor animal welfare in China. Mother Nature will get her own back, as she is doing now. It’s a warning to the world.

Thank you for the article about American beef farming and its frightening consequences. Industrial beef production may not enable animal to human virus transmission, but you mention the huge amount of antibiotics used to keep the cattle healthy which is itself dangerous. It could make antibiotics less effective as they enter the human food chain and we gradually develop immunity to them. Then there is the destruction of huge areas of land, such as the Amazon rainforest to produce animal foodstuffs such as soya, which is destroying the planet. Allan Williams, East London on

We have some of the best meat with the highest standards of animal welfare in the world.

So why would we want the hormone-filled rubbish America is trying to unload onto us in a trade deal?

We produce enough meat for ourselves and some to export.

Boris Johnson and his cronies must take notice of public opinion and not be bullied by Trump and the USA.

Think farmers. of our hard- working

People say they won’t buy this hormone- injected meat from America – or maybe supermarkets will refuse to stock it.

But what is to stop it getting into processed food or being re-labelled and sold on?

The prospect of Donald Trump forcing this to be part of any postBrexit trade deal if he is re-elected is terrifying – and I simply don’t

trust the Government to prevent it from happening.

J Lowe, Derby

We must not import American chicken and meat at any price.

We have one of the best meat trades in Europe, if not the world, and it must not be put at risk in any trade deal with the USA.

The same goes for the NHS. I cannot see American meat selling over here anyway.

I won’t buy it and I don’t think most of the people in this country will either.

Michael Maher, Ashton-under-Lyne Gtr Manchester

Well done on your report about beef production in the USA.

It appears that the Americans care very little for the welfare of the cattle or the health of their population.

This substandard meat must not be allowed into the UK.
