DOUBLE HANDFUL

- John Shaw’s racing betting column in association with

IHAVE three tried-and-tested rules of betting. They have never made me any money but by spouting them I annoy an awful lot of people, which is just as rewarding. One: If in doubt, have a bet.

Two: Chasing losses can an be costly, chasing women more so.

Three: Back one of the horses in the top two in the betting when it comes to the Dewhurst.

Everybody knows that the winner of the Dewhurst will get his dues. Seven horses have won this Group One for two-year-olds this century and gone on to win a Classic the following year.

But did you know that the top two in the betting have produced eight winners in this race since 2010?

Given the two horses at the head of the market this year are the unbeaten pair Chindit and THUNDER MOON, I have every reason to believe that trend is set to continue.

Richard Hannon’s Chindit has done nothing wrong in winning his three races to date, stepping up from maiden to Listed and, most recently, Group class. No other horse has got within a length of him to date, with Albasheer back in second on his latest outing. I’m Im a littl little perplexed, though, to see him shorter in the betting tha than Thunder Moon, who lo looked hugely impressive o on his last run.

Both his victories have come at the Curragh but it was his latest outing, the Group One National Stakes, where he really c caught the eye. Joseph O’Brien’s charge acce accelerated twice after being hampere hampered.

When the question was asked, he asserted his superiority in a mere matter of strides.

Two of the horses he beat, Wembley and St Mark’s Basilica, re-oppose this afternoon and on that evidence don’t stand an earthly.

I have a feeling Thunder Moon could be something very special and I have already struck a bet on him winning the 2021 Epsom Derby at 33-1 with Paddy Power.
