CYCLING TO BRIGHTON... YES WE CAN

-

Most children sent home from their school bubble to self-isolate would welcome the time to work on their Fortnite top score or learn a new TikTok dance, but nine-year-old Sophie cycled 358 miles and raised £400 for her local foodbank.

Upset at not being able to do her litterpicking every day in Blyth, Northumberland, which has already raised £1,250 for charity, Sophie and her sisters Lily, 11, and Caitlin, 13, decided to ‘cycle’ to London from Blyth on their exercise bike at home.

Their aim was to do the distance to London in 12 days, which is probably about the time it takes by train these days, but they passed the capital and made it to Brighton by the time they had to go back to school on Monday.

Sophie says: “From Blyth, it’s 358 miles to Brighton, and for every mile we cycled, we pledged to buy one can for our food parcel for Blyth foodbank.

“My six-year-old brother Brandon was too small to cycle for cans so we set him some tasks. He had to walk around during home school and before tea in the yard and for every 500 steps he got one item. His total was 79 items!

“So all in all we pledged to buy 437 items for our food parcel, plus the extra donated food items from people.”

Mum Kirsty Moan says: “Sophie had expected to raise an extra £50 for the foodbank on top of this but I’m so proud because she smashed her target and has raised £400!”

Sophie and her siblings are back in class now, but their fundraiser is still open at gofundme.com/f/cycling-for-cans
