‘Cannonball’ Astall dead

-

ENGLAND’S oldest surviving international footballer, Gordon Astall, has died aged 93.

Gordon played twice for the Three Lions in 1956 under manager Walter Winterbottom – scoring in a 5-1 victory in Finland then featuring in a 3-1 win over West Germany days later.

Winger Gordon was dubbed “Cannonball” thanks to his fierce shot and was spotted playing for a Royal Marines side shortly after the Second World War.

The dad of two played for Plymouth, Torquay and Birmingham, then worked in insurance and coached teams.

The FA and Plymouth Argyle said they are “deeply saddened”. Birmingham City said: “Our thoughts are with his family.”

AIndoor sport can only take place if the general gathering rules in that area are complied with. In high or very high risk areas, individual households or bubbles can participate in indoor sport but must not mix with other households or bubbles. Disabled indoor sport and supervised sports for children are exempt from these restrictions. Outdoor sports can continue to take place with more than six people if they are organised by a company or other recognised body, and lwhere this body undertakes the relevant precautions.

Q

How should I plan Christmas with my family this year?

A

Christmas is two months away, and the Government is reviewing its response to Coronavirus all the time. At the moment, it’s against the law to meet people you don’t live with in groups of more than six for those in medium Local Covid Alert Level areas. Those in high and very high risk areas can meet up in groups of up to six people outdoors, and one household or support bubble indoors.
