POETRY CORNER
Today’s Freedom of Expression poem by Lianne Kelly is an inspiring and timely reminder that the right to free speech is the bedrock of our society, and should not be discarded lightly.
Having entered the Human Rights Poetry Festival in her home city of Coventry, Lianne wanted to share her work in the hope it would resonate with readers given recent events.
Pictured here with her granddaughter Scarlett-Louise Kelly, Lianne says: “I’m 52 and have been a single mum for 23 years to my two sons, Jack and Jos Josh, who are 25 and 30. They’re a credit to me – and themselves – and I now have four granddaughters.
“I started writing in th the 1980s as it was the onl only way I could express my f feelings. It now makes sense because at 32 I was diagnosed with mental health problems.
“Over the years I have written many poems and short stories and am now attempting to write the story about how mental health has affected my life.”
Freedom of Expression
In the face of adversity
With your back against the wall, Being pushed into a corner
To the noise of slamming doors.
In the face of adversity
Whilst others do their deeds, Denying your reality
To bring you to your knees.
Your spoken words – they go unheard Silence hangs heavy in the air, Opinions don’t seem to matter No one’s listening – they don’t care. Stand straight and stand tall Fight your fight with much pride, Our words are very precious
Our thoughts we should not hide. So, in the face of adversity When things seem really grim, Articulate your words out loud Speaking your mind – is not a sin.
