DANNY WELBECK hopes to turn back the clock at Graham Potter’s rescue home for knackered thoroughbreds

Welbeck and England pal Adam Lallana showed just what they are capable when they combined in one glorious moment just 12 minutes in.

It resulted in Welbeck bagging his first goal since joining the Seagulls on a free – a clinical dink over the advancing keeper after Lallana had sent him away.

The 29-year-old hopes it’s the first of many as he tries to convince a sceptical world that he is not past his sell-by date.

It’s only two years since Welbeck went to the World Cup with England before breaking his ankle a few months later.

Lallana has represented his country at the World Cup and

European Championship – and he’s only 31.

They are both class acts and could have put Brighton out of sight but for a succession of missed chances.

Welbeck said: “You know Adam, with his vision, can always play you through.

“I took a good first touch and once I got close I knew what I was going to do.

“My mission is to come here and score goals and help the team. That is the thing that is on my mind at the moment. Anything else that happens after that is a bonus. I am feeling fitter and stronger each week so there is plenty more to come.”

Seagulls boss Potter says y Welbeck has been a joy to work with.

“He’s been a breath of fresh air,” said Potter

(with his striker, right). “He looks like he’s enjoying his football and he needs that.

We’re enjoying having him here. I’m sure he’s delighted to get on the scoresheet. His ability and quality has never been in doubt. He’s p physically y y fit but you have to build the rest on top of that.”

Brighton paid the price for missed chances when Vi l l a equalised just a couple of minutes into the second half – Ezri Konsa sliding in at the far post to convert. But Potter’s men hit back quickly, Solly March scoring
