Hot-stuff Lewis stirs it up at top with his first goal in FOUR years

-

LEWIS COOK decorated his wonder goal with the most downbeat celebration of the season – because he was so embarrassed it took four years to break his duck.

As captain of England’s Under-20 World Cup winners in 2017, Cook knows how to let it all hang out.

His dipping rocket crowned Bournemouth’s comeback from two goals down to knock Reading off the Championship summit.

And Cook simply turned and walked away as if he was whistling in the dark.

For nonchalance, it was up there with Justin Fashanu’s indifference after his goal of the season for Norwich against Liverpool – beating the late, great Ray Clemence – 40 years ago. Cook, who saw Dominic Solanke (below) score a double, shrugged: “That’s the way I am – some people do all sorts of fancy things when they hey score, but I prefer just to o take it in.

“If I was knocking in

10 or 15 goals a season, maybe I would celebrate a bit more.

“And it’s frustrating ting because I should score more goals than I have been doing.

“I know I can, and it’s something I’ve been working on, but trust me – I was very happy. It’s a shame I couldn’t share it with the fans, but it was wasn’t meant to be.

“The last time I scored one like that was a couple of days ago in training, but my last o one in a proper game w was when I was at Leed Leeds... a long time ago. “A few of the boys have been ribbing me about it – Adam Smith, who doesn’t score many himself, has been giving me a bit of grief about it.

“I haven’t got time to celebrate as it’s such a quick turnaround before our next game, so I’ll just watch it back a few times and hope there’s another one coming soon.”

Bournemouth got Cook as a 19-year-old for or £7million in 2017.

And if his first bullseye was a long time coming, it was worth its wait in gold. Reading, completely on top for 45 minutes after Lucas Joao’s penalty and Sone Aluko’s first goal since January 2019, collapsed to their four fourth consecutive defeat.

But Solanke’s brace, A Arnaut Danjuma and Cook’s mi s s i l e c ompl e t ed the t turnaround to delight Ja Jason Tindall ( left). R Royals boss Veljko Paunovic said his team went from “perfection” to “unacceptable”.

He will only be placated by three points at Millwall to stop the rot on Wednesday night.

But Paunovic warned: “Nobody will give it to us – we have to go out there and get it for ourselves.”
