New restrictions a ‘body blow’ for hard-hit businesses

BUSINESS owners in Birmingham described the government decision to put the city into Tier 3 restrictions as a “body blow”.

Restaurants and pubs had been hoping to re-open to customers under Tier 2 when the latest lockdown ends next week.

But instead they will have to remain shut except for takeaways and click-and-collect orders – leaving many on the brink.

In this trendy suburb of Moseley, independent businesses fear the move could see them forced to shut for good.

They were closed during the first lockdown but enjoyed a bumper summer thanks to the ‘Eat Out to Help Out’ scheme.

The second lockdown has seen them only allowed to stay open for takeaways – which they say is not a viable long-term option. Syrian refugee Subhi al Sheikh, 30, came to the UK in 2014 and set up the popular Palmyra restaurant.

He has been forced to furlough his entire staff – leaving him having to cook food and serve takeaway customers.

He said: “It’s been difficult but I thought there was light at the end of the tunnel next week. Not that hope is gone. Some days we have no more than one or two orders. It’s costing me money to stay open but I have a duty not to close.

“I’m worried about the business, for sure.”

At the Cafephilia coffee shop, assistant Aisha Muse, 24, said: “Tier 3 means we can’t re-open the seating. Just when we had hoped to pick up trade for Christmas.

“It’s really hard. We’ve all had our hours cut but I’m just trying to look on the bright side – at least I still have a job.”
