On Last Night’s TV

- IAN HYLAND Coronation Street, ITV

Never mind Corrie’s 60th birthday. Some of us were worried we might have to wait until its 70th for Yasmeen and Geoff to end up in front of a judge.

So it was relief all round last night. Obviously, after the thrilling climax to Sky Atlantic’s The Undoing on Monday night Corrie was unlikely to win any courtroom scene of the week awards.

It was gripping in its own way, though. The social distancing definitely added tension and intrigue.

In that tiny room, Yasmeen appeared more trapped than ever. She was certainly a lot closer physically to Geoff than she would have liked.

As for Geoff, you had to wonder whether his crocodile tears might lose their persuasive edge as the jury sat in another room pretending to

look interested. Honestly, it was like watching your work colleagues during a whole department Zoom conference.

I guess we will have to rely on the fact that any juror worth their salt would have marked him down as a wrong ’un the minute he introduced himself as “Geoffrey”.

Either that, or hope they picked up on his own lawyer’s none-too-subtle hint when she said: “You don’t have to like him.” We can’t count on Geoff’s ex-wife Elaine riding to Yasmeen’s rescue from the local psychiatric ward.

At least we can be sure Geoff will get his comeuppance eventually. There’s no way Corrie’s writers would ever let him get away with it.

There’s more chance of Ray Crosby ever doing a convincing Mancunian accent.

Carrying around a normal Purell bottle is beyond... I don’t like it. If we’re gonna have to do all this, I’d rather make it fashionable.”

Paris Hilton has invested in a “glamorous” designer hand sanitiser bottle covered in Swarovski crystals because even her coronavirus hygiene accessories must sparkle.
