emerged the FA might not be able to take any action because it could be deemed as a political protest, despite being widely condemned as racist.

The scenes have caused outrage as the return of 2,000 fans became another grim day for the Championship club despite Millwall issuing a plea before the game for fans not to boo.

It is understood tempers frayed as black employees demanded to know what action is being taken address the situation.

The squad is also known to be unhappy at the conduct of their fans with their disgust articulated by defender Mahlon Romeo.

The right- back (above) said: “The fans who have been let in have personally disrespected not just me but the football club.

“I feel really low to

– probably the lowest I’ve felt in my time at this club.”

Mi l lwal l released a stateme n t yesterday condemning their own supporters and said they were “dismayed and saddened” after players were booed for taking the knee.

“The players are continuing to use the biggest platform they have to support the drive for change, not just in football but in society generally,” it added.

The FA are now looking at the incident and are talking to Millwall and the EFL, but can only take action against the club as the fans are beyond their control. They would be able to ban supporters for making racist chants but cannot do it over a protest.

Millwall fans on social media are claiming they were protesting against the Black Lives Matter movement and the taking of the knee which gives the authorities little scope for taking action. But Lions players will take the knee again tomorrow at home to QPR.

Wayne Rooney – in charge of Derby on Saturday – issued a statement yesterday in which he called the behaviour “disgraceful and mindless” before adding: “I was proud of my players and staff for not letting the fans deter them from continuing to present a positive and important message that taking the knee immediately before a game sends.”

A si m i l a r incident occurred when Colchester hosted Grimsby in League Two on Saturday. A small section of those in a ttendance booed when players took the knee.
