Scowen certain Johnson will succeed

JOSH SCOWEN SCO is convinced Lee Johnson can get the B Black Cats purring again. again

Teenager Kyle Ky Joseph’s 16th-minute W Wigan strike – his first in senior seni football – ruined Johnson’s Johns first game as Sunderland’s Sunderl new manager.

But the Black Cats are only three points off the play-offs, so the door is open for former Bristol City boss Johnson to change all that.

And one man who knows all about his methods is midfielder Scowen, who played under Johnson ( left) at Barnsley.

He said: “My experiences with him have been good. He will improve everyone, no matter how old you are.

“I’m excited to work under him again and look forward to the future.

“We have a really strong squad. This period will see a lot of changes maybe, but whatever side goes out is more than capable of getting points.”

Johnson said: “I want to see a brave new Sunderland. I want to be bold in the way we play and the club to make bold decisions.”

Johnson recalled Aiden McGeady, who had fallen out with former boss Phil Parkinson, for a first start since November 2019. The Irishman (above) went close early on when he hit the side netting after Grant Leadbitter set him up. But the hosts struggled to test Latics keeper Jamie Jones apart from that and Joseph capitalised when Bailey Wright dawdled in possession his own area.

The goal ended Wigan’s 10- game winless run but they remain bottom. Joseph, 19, said: “It had been coming – and what a place to do it at as well!” in
